Anxiety treatment- how to does it work?

First let’s start by explaining what anxiety is.
As we read on APA ( American Psychological Association):

Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure.

People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat.”

There are certain criteria that need to be met for someone to be diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder. As I often say, it’s more about the “functionality” of our behaviours more than about labelling them. What I mean by that is: are those worries affecting the way I live? Are they limiting me in any way? Would I like to stop having them? To which extend are these worries affecting my everyday decisions?

If you feel that your anxiety levels are affecting your everyday decisions it does not mean you suffer from an anxiety disorder. Either way, anxiety treatment can assist you with reducing your worries and can help you live a happier life. How does anxiety treatment work?

First we start by measuring your anxiety levels. You can do it by completing one of the free questionnaires such as DASS21. Again, it’s not about labelling by more about identifying the areas to improve and to track the progress.

Next we identify which worries should be addressed first. What’s the most important thing for you to start working on?

During the following sessions we choose a variety of tools to help you manage your anxiety levels. Most common approaches include CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and ACT ( Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).

How long does the treatment last?

Of course, it all depends on the initial anxiety levels, however most clients benefit from at least 10 sessions.

The good news is that anxiety disorders are highly treatable 🙂
