Medicare Safety Net

Reaching the Medicare safety net can make your psychology sessions much cheaper. When you spend a certain amount on out-of-pocket costs, Medicare offers increased rebates (80-90%). Many of my clients reach that point around June- July.

If you are an individual, you don’t need to register, but if you are a couple or a family, then yes, you will have to register.

So, how much do you need to spend out of pocket?

Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)- General

$2544.30

Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) – Concessional and Family Tax Benefit Part A

$811.80

(This applies to the calendar year, starting from the first of January) .

What does it mean in practical terms?

If you pay $230 per session, you will get at least $176 back (80%), which means only $54 out of pocket.

(Most of my clients actually get around %88 back, which means only around $30 per session!)

What to do next?

Check how much you have spent already and how far you are from reaching your Medicare safety net.

Register ( if you haven’t done it so far).

Pay attention to your medicare costs, as this can affect planning your sessions this year.

You can find more information on the Medicare website.
